A Knife Block That Doesn't Dull the Blade

CAD — 1:4 SCALE
FINISHED PART
The Problem
Slot-style knife blocks press steel against steel edges every time a knife is drawn out at an angle. Over a year, that dulls a blade faster than actual cutting does.
The Solution
A magnetic oak block with a printed alignment guide inside each channel, so every knife drops in and out on the flat of the blade, never the edge.

Material

Walnut, rare-earth magnets, PLA jig

Process

  1. 01 Test grain direction for magnet strength
  2. 02 Model the internal guide channels
  3. 03 Print the alignment jig
  4. 04 Assemble and calibrate by hand

The Story

One of us kept sharpening the same three knives every month and couldn't figure out why. It was the block. The fix took longer to source the magnets for than to design.

Small problem, small object, but the kind of daily friction that’s worth designing out properly rather than living with.
